Below is a little snap-shot of how I tick, including what I love about being a life coach, what I love about life, and what professional experience I bring to our relationship.
How I became a Life Coach
|
|
I have always found people and personal growth absolutely fascinating.
In my early 20's this fascination led me into a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communication Studies, followed by a career in education where I specialised in leading treks for teenagers who were "at risk" of falling through the system.
During this time I invested in 3 years formal training in Gestalt Therapy - though eventually found coaching as my preferred method of operation.
|
Desiring greater accountability and more flexibility lead me to start my own private life coaching practice in 2002. In 2000 my wife, Inger, also started a small home business which allowed me to apply a number of my coaching principles to a business context.
In 2004 I formalised the coaching skills I had developed on the treks and in private practice by becoming a certified coach with the Coach Training Alliance. For the last couple of years I have continued to enjoy professional growth and training through their niche coach training programs and courses.
What I love about Coaching:
Over the last five years I have fallen in love with the miraculous nature of coaching. Every time clients move beyond fear and achieve something amazing in their lives, my faith in human nature and our creative potential is strengthened.
I've always believed life can be a wonderful and joyful adventure regardless of what circumstance we find ourselves - being a life coach allows me to test the truth of this premise on a daily basis . I've yet to be disappointed.
What I love about my life:
My greatest love would have to be my wife, Inger, and two children. Inger is my teacher in how to love, while Finn (6 years) and Rose (3 years) teach me how to access joy and being in the moment.
Everyday I aim to learn from my children how to beam and be joyous. Finn doesn't walk here and there in a heavy sodden way like an adult. Rather he gambols, frolics and flaps from A to B totally in the excitement of the moment.
Likewise I love the way Rose moves around in pure ecstasy, seeming to gain enormous amounts of pleasure in simply feeling her body in motion.
My other great love besides my family is my home and acreage. I live on a top of a hill in a timber home which I am constantly modifying and improving.
|
|
I enjoy knocking down walls, adding steps and creating aesthetic features. My home's my canvas where I express myself visually. It's a great balance to the conceptual and social nature of my profession.
What I bring to our coaching relationship:
15 years ago I couldn't have imagined a life as fulfilled and joyful as I'm living now. From my life's journey thus far I bring a wealth of practical knowledge and first hand experience in the art of personal growth and self realization.
"With Dixon's first hand experiences in areas ranging from business management to counselling , from musician to teacher , coupled with his passion for life and coaching, I feel that anyone willing to give it a try would gain something from interacting with him. His dedication to service and lightness of being are a joy in themselves"

I've written a little story below about how the name Redwood came into being as well as its significance for my coaching practice
|
|
In 2002, for my 30th Birthday, my wife, Inger, drew a beautiful redwood tree on the front of my card.
This was also the year I began my private coaching practice. As it turned out the first incarnation of my coaching practice was called Creative Courage not Redwood. It was a very appropriate name for my practice at that time because my coaching style and life was fairly intense. In order to make things happen, I tended to throw myself into new projects without a lot of support. This naturally took a lot of Creative Courage.

 |
|
|
In 2004, after a couple years of coaching and an enlightening experience with the Coach Training Alliance, I realized growth and change didn't need to be as intense as I was making it. I discovered a much lighter more enjoyable way of being and coaching. At this point it felt as though Creative Courage no longer fit well with who I was and how I wished to coach.
When I was considering a new name I remembered my redwood card which Inger gave me. I did some research about redwoods and discovered some meaningful qualities which resonated beautifully with how I was feeling. Inger, in her usual intuitive way, was a couple of years ahead of me!
Here's a summary of what I found most significant:
| Redwoods are the largest, tallest, longest living trees in the world -- yet despite their immense size, they are not attached to the earth via a tap root.
These majestic trees achieve their height and strength by taking their time, growing in a balanced way towards the light, and reaching out for support from the roots of other Redwood Trees.
